Obama did Cocaine?

A very interesting piece from the Washington Post this morning on Barack Obama. According to the piece when he was the editor of the Harvard Law Review he was approached by a publisher and asked to write a memoir at which point he agreed. Through the writing he explained that due to racial identity struggles he experimented with drugs and in fact has done cocaine. So, where do we go from here is the question. I think how the public takes this will be determined how Obama responds to this in the next couple days. I think if he is up front and truthful that yes this in fact did happen, he accpets responsibility, and moves on, it can go away. If he tries to get slick and deny or deflect blame it won’t. For me, I don’t care if he tried drugs in his past – it has no effect on my opinion of him.

Apparently he was asked to publish a book because he was the first black editor of the Harvard Law Review. Is it general knowledge that one who is half white and half black is recognized as black?

  1. I don’t know whether the coke use is a big deal or not, frankly. A bigger problem might be the “creepy factor,” which cost Nixon the first go around. He looks like a bit player in Close Encounters. (Ok, there is also Obama’s unfortunate middle name, which no one mentions.) All that aside, what bothers me is his complete lack of experience. I live in Illinois, and it must be remembered that he ran unopposed (no one counts last-minute entry crazy, carpetbagging Alan Keyes) when he got his “landslide.” When one has no opponent, 70% isn’t such a great number, after all. At this point, he’s an absolute rookie panting at the heels of Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, repeating the dictated line. I really hate the way he didn’t even stand up to Durbin when he called our servicemen nazis and soviets. (You will remember Durbin read that into the Congressional Record; it was not an offhand remark. His non-apology was insulting and made the situation worse.) In short, at best, Obama either has no backbone and cannot think for himself, or at worst Obama is unfit to be commander-in-chief as he despises the military. This guy needs more time, experience and to actually DO something besides take expensive trips and echo the party line before I’ll ever consider him a viable candidate. Where are the old-fashioned democrats like Truman and JFK? People who actually understand economics and value national defense? Who is there, beyond Zel Miller and Joe Lieberman, neither of whom will run? THAT’S the type of president we need, not these shallow liberal synchophants and fools.

  2. thanks for the response and enlightenmnet lisa! you sound to be very eduated in obama and his background…good to hear from someone based in illinois. the middle name (huseein) is interesting as he was the son of an african and white american…unexpected i guess. i do agree a freshman senator should be a bit more seasoned before running for president. though the public does seem to be “snowed” into believing this guy is as hot as the media makes him out to be.

jfk you saw? im reading a very interesting book on him called “the darkside of camelot”. after reading this, not sure jfk is the kind of democrat we want. anyway, all very interesting and thanks for the post!

  3. The question of so-called “racial” identity varies from place to place. The US, as a former English colony, subscribed to the “one-drop” rule of African identity. This meant that any individual with what was deemed to be even “one drop” of African blood was to be considered “Black” or “African.” A by product of this legal and social approach to “race” was the phenomenon of “passing.” Passing refers to the practice of individuals with a “white” phenotype and African ancestry passing/living as “whites” while denying or suppressing any African or Black social-familial-cultural connections. Fairly widespread.

In Latin America, the reverse was often true based on the approach of the Spanish and Portuguese – and the demographics of their colonial holdings. In the US, Africans were outnumbered – often by as much as 8 to 1. In fact, importation of Africans was illegal after 1808.

In Latin America, whites were outnumbered. Therefore, one drop of “Black blood” didn’t make one “Black” because it would be superceded by one drop of “white blood.” So, the same person who might be considered white in Cuba would be considered Black in North Carolina.

Among Latinos and other Spanish-speaking Africans, questions of race have often been subsumed under questions of national identity and language within the US…but back at home the questions regarding “race” often persist.

Barack Obama is black and white…insofar as those terms mean anything. He is both according to the appearance of his parents and by his own admission. It is arguable, however, that based on reading his first book, his cultural affinities are most closely tied to Black people within the US and the diaspora. That makes perfect sense given that according to US tradition, he could not “live as a white man.”

  4. thanks temple3 for the explanation – i figured there was a historical sense of racial identity…i just didnt know what it was.

  5. Obama is unqualified becuase he is burdened by the inevitable psychological neuroses which apply to blacks -culturally created, I grant, but real, that make most black men resentful, suspicious, insecure and over-reactive. Obama would have to be a very cool customer indeed, to have overcome this personality affliction. I don’t want to worry that the President was unable to cooly, dispassionately evaluate a complex international balance. If he were a historian, that would help..

  6. I have heard, but obviously have no way of verifying, that both his parents had fairly severe psychological problems. That is the one great concern I have. Both his parents died relatively young, so there is no way to assess the genetic factor in their son.

  7. rjc – interesting take, but seems to be a pretty broad brush you are suing. can you be more specific and give some examples? i am unsure its fair to say obama is resentful, insecure, and over-reactive. many would say quite the contrary. and this isnt me defending him…i have no allegiance to him or his campaign!

rob – i have no idea if this is true or not. he hasnt exhibited any of these problems if in fact his parents did have them.

all good commends – thanks for stopping by!

  8. Obama was absent from the Illinois Senate
on November 4, 1999. His name was on 2 bills
    mentioned during that session.
Does anyone know where Obama was on November 4?

  9. citizenwells – no idea where barack obama was on november, 4th, 1999. i couldnt tell you where he was last week, but what are you getting at?

  10. You have heard the Larry Sinclair allegations.
That he met with Obama between November 3-8 1999.
When I first read this, I decided to do some research.
I discovered that Obama missed the November 4 1999
    Illinois Senate session.
I believe this is a legitimate question.
It should be simple to answer.

  11. i hadnt heard of it before you mentioned it. just googled it and read about it. waste of my time and energy in my opinion. my opinion of barack has changed since the issues with his pastor though. im not quite as strong for him as i was previously.

  12. No single event or fact caused me to be concerned, but the body
of evidence has. As I have stated before, I hope that the allegations about Obama are false.
    Thanks.

  13. Has anyone to your knowledge ever asked Obama if he has used cocaine in the last 10 years? Has anyone asked him if he has or would take a drug test to verify a claim that he has not used cocaine in the last 10 years?

  14. curious – i have no knowledge of obama using any drugs in the last 10 years. if asked im guessing he would take a drug test to verify it. in his book his experiments with drugs were in his younger years. all of which is totally irrelevant to me.

  15. whoever wrote this is a fucking retard and should do some research. Obama stated in his book, Dreams from My Father (1995), about his high school and college drug use: “Pot had helped, and booze; maybe a little blow when you could afford it.” So since this was way before this article came out whoever wrote it should really know there shit first

  16. chad – not sure what your point is? the article mostly quotes a book and makes observations.

  17. This won’t be long I promise: I met a bi-racial man a few years back and asking him general questions about his mixed identity, I then followed with the questions: “So, you’re half-black?” HE said no. “So you’re half white?” He said no. “I’m black and white.”

What I gathered from this was that even the term ‘half’ can be diminishing; almost as if people who are mixed heritage aren’t even granted as being a “fully black person” or any other race they’re mixed with. I think in Obama’s case, he’s a person of color. Period. So yes, he’s assumed black
