We had a tour and orientation program last week at the new Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center on the Mayo Clinic Campus. It’s amazing! It started with a presentation on what to expect, the rules and regulations of the center, and the different offerings they will have. We then went on an extensive tour throughout the entire complex. From the solid maple locker rooms, to the tile in the pool area, I didn’t really feel like I was in a “gym”. The clear focus is on cardio with all of the treadmills, eliptical machines, etc. out on the main floor. There is a dedicated free weight area along with several free motion nautilus type weight machines. Each cardio machine has it’s own dedicated LCD that one can tune to any channel and there are larege flat panel TVs all around the complex to view from a distance. The place is great and I can’t wait to get started on Septemeber 4th when it opens to it’s members.

arleen, i don’t even live in roch and i have been to Dan ages ago! i felt the check in process was very simple as well. work out areas are gorgeous and i love the huge windows and all the natural light. if i were to move to roch, i would use get my ass in gear and start working with one of their personal trainers. love the programmed work out plan that you can use on non trainer days. Dan is the bomb!
Well September 4th quickly turned into November 14th. I went to the Dan last night for the first time. It was suggested I go around 4 pm as it gets very busy around 5 with people coming directly from work. The checkin process is very nice…simply swiping your card and going in. This is much more efficient than the RACs checking in process of giving your card to an attendant who then opens a gate. The workout floor was busy, but not crazy. I easily found a treadmill and a stationary bike after that. The weight area was also not too busy and I got on all the machines I wanted. First time experience was very good! Curious to hear what others think about it?!
Worked out at the Dan with my daughter when I visited her in Rochester this summer – it was fabulous! They charge $10 per day for visitors – not a bad deal. We have some nice facilities here in Roch East (NY), but nothing like the Dan!
yea – its a fabulous place to go isnt it! mayo employees are very luck to have it!
do you know if you can practice basquetball in Dan?
nope – no basketball at the dan!
Why do people call it the dan? that really bugs me. but yes it is a very awesome place.
because its easier to say than “the dan abraham healthy living center”. seems reasonable to me.
I have major issues with an exercise facility that doesn’t allow you to wear standard exercise gear(all my yoga tops were considered “unacceptable” for wear in the gym because they exposed my shoulders). Ridiculous policy – especially considering short running shorts ARE permitted. As a fitness lover, I am completely offended and put off by this archaic policy. SHAME ON THE DAHLC :(
I totally agree with you! I was excited to join and think its amazing facility. But the first time I worked out there I planned to relax in the hot tub and sauna after my run. I realized then that my swimsuit was considered “unacceptable” as well! It is 2010 and I was comepletely shocked that I couldn’t wear a bikini. Especially in a WOMENS ONLY hot tub and sauna. Completely ridiculous.
For what it’s worth, I work out there regularly and have never heard it referred to as “Dan.” I think it’s an amazing place as well and feel incredibly fortunate to have it available for me, but my main gripe is the fact that there’s a “women’s only” workout area and not a similar spot for men. I can’t begin to understand how that can possibly be justified.
I’m a patient at Mayo.Why can’t I buy a membership to this facility?I’m here for a month!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
