Winter Golf Season

Well, our winter golf season has started!  Have been playing cards every Saturday around 1 in the afternoon with a little twist this year.  We are playing more dealers choice than Texas hold em.  Playing 7 card stud low chicago, 5 card draw, Omaha, etc.  Initially I didn’t really like them as much as hold em, but have acquired the taste for Omanha…what a great game.  There are two ways to play – can either play Omaha hi or Omaha hi-low.  Here’s how they work:

Omaha Hi – each player is dealt 4 cards and betting is done.  Then there are 3 community cards turned and betting is done again.  Then another community card is turned, bet again, then the final community card is turned and you get again.  Generally were playing pot limits with 6-9 people playing, but the pots can get pretty big.  The twist with Omaha is that you HAVE TO use 2 cards from your hand and 3 from the board…it makes very ugly cards in your hand turn to gold and vice versa.  The best poker hand wins.

Omaha Hi-Lo – this is a split pot game where the best poker hand wins half and the WORST poker hand wins half.  The logistics are the smae as above and in the end a player can play both the high and lo ends by using a mixture of the 4 different cards he holds.  This is a nice game if you are “guaranteed” the low and recognize it.  For example, saw you hold A-2-10-K in your hand.  the flow comes 4-7-10, turn comes Q, and river comes 6.  The best possible lowest hand is A-2-4-6-7 so you are guarnteed half the pot…bet big!  Be careful about the other guy who might also have A-2 though in which case you’re going to split the low and only end up with 25% of the total.

Anyway, it’s a great game!  Happy holidays and hope you’re winter golf is gud!
